"One of the best and thorough examples of the differences of Fujifilm film simulations. Well done!!" - Pedro F

"If you have a Fuji X-series camera, take this course, even if you only (now) shoot in RAW." - Robert Y

"Excellent course and the only course that clearly explains the differences, similarities and suggested uses for fuji film simulations in an easy to follow and easy to understand manner." - Beverly J

"I like how the course is explained in details with charts and also with photos side by side comparisons to further emphasised the points he was making. He is generous with his knowledge and I certainly learn a lot and look forward to have fun with my xt30." - JunTing Y

"I found the course really helpful. It assumed a certain level of knowledge but not too much. I‘m new to Fuji having shot Nikon for the last 30 + years and it’s been a bit of a steep learning curve. I certainly have a greater understanding of the various film simulations now, so one less thing to worry about. If only I could find ‘a users guide for the XT3!’

I would recommend this course to all Fuji users. And it’s Free !" - Karl L

"Great tutorial that explains all the many different Fujifilm Film Simulations in a very structured and clear way, thank you very much!" - Ralph K

"I am a beginner, with a great camera: x100f. This approach to JPEGs is not straightforward but for me, fascinating. John keeps it simple and understandable. Truly a great and generous teacher. Thank you." - Adrian

"Very informative. You don't need to know anything about Film Simulations before you start. The course gives you a good knowledge of the Film Simulations - their differences and purposes - but it also made me think about the way I photograph in general." - Tina J

"This is great, I learned a lot. I came out knowing so much more than when I came in. In order, one, I found out why using film simulations is smarter than doing it later in Lightroom, two, I found out that using presets makes using film simulations easy and three now I'm armed with knowledge, which sim to use for portraits or the low, key cool teenage look or the brighten it up the look and most exciting the great potential of B & W." -  David M

"Great course! I love using Fuji film simulations and this course gave a very thorough yet quick explanation on the intention behind each. I feel I can apply the logic of each film simulation to my storytelling after finishing this course." - Vladimir I

“This is the most comprehensive explanation of the film simulations I have encountered. I have struggled to determine how to use them without the complex recipes suggested by others. Thank you.”

“A really well conceived and executed introduction to Fujifilm film simulations. It gives a good understanding of what they are meant to do, and how to use them. Allthough it works well as an introduction, it also goes well beyond the basic, for instance when covering effects of white balance shifts with Acros simulations.”

“The best explanation for how and when to use the Fujifilm simulations. You could spend a lot of time in trial and error determining how to best use the simulations in camera only resulting in frustration. When here it is the best explained and demonstrated uses for the simulation. It just doesn't get any better than this.”

“I highly recommend this short course. The information is clearly and professionally presented with graphics and images to demonstrate the different film simulations and how they relate and differ from each other and why you would choose to use them. Prior to discovering this course, I spent several days reading blogs and watching YouTube videos about Fujifilm film simulations before I made the decision to purchase my first Fujifilm Camera, time which I would have saved had I watched this course first. All of the relevant information was condensed into a short series of logically organised and clearly presented videos, and I now feel completely confident to use the simulations in my camera.”

Your instructor

I have a unique background in education that started in the U.S. Air Force where I was an F-15E flight instructor for ten years and wrote F-15E training curricula. I continued to teach helicopter lessons after transitioning to civilian life.
But I soon discovered my passion was telling stories through photography. I'm now an accredited associate photographer with Photographers Without Borders and have worked on documentary projects around the world, and have also taught photography on three continents. I've been a professional photographer for nearly ten years, having been published in places like New York Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, Tahoe Quarterly, and National Geographic Online. Photography is a joy that everyone should have access to, and I'd like to pass it on to you also!
